Need help finding a book i was told about

My friend told me about this book he read,only the covers were ripped off so he doesn't know the title or the author.
It's set in a world where people live along with magical beings,the main character is trying to paint the most beautiful painting in the world,every painting he paints is more beautiful than the previous,but he is convinced he has to find these so called relics so he can paint it,i know one is a painting with a map on the other side.
I have a few other details like there was a guy with a tennis racket that is actually a gun and can turn into an axe or something,there demon slayers that nobody likes.And a scene where the guy is left robbed of his money crying and this girl is sitting in the street where it's so dirty nobody would ever sit there and he sits next to her and talks to her.
Well that's what i have on the book,i hope someone can help me find it.

Sounds like an interesting (and very imaginative) book.  If I had the time, I might be able to find it by sifting through different possibilities given what you've got here.  I see these books on a daily basis, so I'll keep an eye out.
